Objective: To work with a team of Americorps members in administering an educational program to promote environmental sustainability.

Evidence Overview:

I worked with a team of Americorps members at the Lonsdale Park site to administer an educational program to a group of high school advanced placement environmental science students from Central Falls. The students were split into 5 groups: Biodiversity, Vegetation, Macro-Invertebrates, Human Impact and Water Quality. I was the leader of the Vegetation and Human Impacts groups. Students in these groups recorded noise pollution, picked up trash, and recorded plants they identified at the site. As evidence, I recorded a few videos of the trash pickup we did at the site and provided photos of the site after the cleanup. In order to complete my objective, I observed previous educational programs at different sites such as Gooseneck Cove to gain a better understanding of how to administer the program and absorb the necessary information pertaining to Save the Bay's mission of environmental advocacy.

Upon completion of my objective, I gained some very valuable skills that are not only applicable to my major, but also applicable to future career goals. I believe it is very important to be able to be comfortable with public speaking, and by stepping up to a leadership position and administering several educational programs, I was able to positively represent Save the Bay while also gaining confidence in my speaking abilities. I believe that one only truly has knowlege of something if they are able to teach it. I learned so much about marine mammals, plants, and the Rhode Island watershed by working at Save the Bay. I was then able to transfer this newly gained knowledge into an educational tool to inspire students to have a passion for the environment as well. As a marine affairs major, my courses focus mainly on marine policy. By interning at Save the Bay, I was introduced to the environmental education and animal husbandry aspects of the marine world. As such, I believe I not only completed my objective, but also gained other valuable skills and knowledge.

Evidence 1: Record short video of the educational program.

Evidence 2: Provide photos I took of the site.
