Environmental Health and Safety Specialist II

Shire Pharmaceuticals Inc., Lexington, MA, March 2017-Present

Ensure EHS compliance as a manufacturing building EHS representative in accordance with GMP practices, clean room practices, FDA regulations, as well as all EHS regulatory agencies. Responsibilities include overseeing all hazardous waste activities and inspections, providing EHS input for all projects, administering a variety of trainings, supervising hot work activities, maintaining compliance with Shire’s No Exposure certification for stormwater, writing/editing/revising EHS programs, investigating incidents and driving corrective/preventative actions to closure, investigating hazards and driving them to closure, and serving as Shire’s EHS drug manufacturing subject matter expert. Additional roles of importance include co-chair of the manufacturing safety committee, member of Shire’s Institutional Biosafety Committee, EHS representative at Lean Daily Improvement (LDI) meetings as part of visual management, EHS representative on the  Project Prioritization Management (PPM) Team, owner and author of Shire’s first Management of Change Program (MOC), and owner of many other EHS programs.

Served as the sole EHS representative at Shire’s largest rare diseases drug manufacturing plant in Cambridge, MA. Actively investigated incidents and developed corrective/preventative actions to be implemented. Delivered a variety of EHS trainings. Performed industrial hygiene monitoring for confined space entries and quarterly monitoring requirements as well as managed inventory and calibration of industrial hygiene equipment. Provided safety assessments for projects to be implemented at the plant. Served as a member of three safety committees. Conducted site safety walks in manufacturing suites and laboratories and performed various environmental/safety inspections.

Provided consulting expertise regarding EHS standards, specifically in the life science and industrial markets. Provided consulting services full-time to Alstom GE in Houston, Texas for nine months and relocated back to the Boston area to service companies in the bio-pharmaceutical market. Skills ranged from plan writing, animal care facilities, biosafety, EHS program evaluation and development, conducting inspections, incident investigation, delivering trainings, hazardous waste management, industrial hygiene sampling, environmental impact assessments, environmental reporting, auditing, record-keeping, site evaluations and permit writing/renewal.

 

Environmental Specialist

Triumvirate Environmental Inc., Somerville, MA, September 2013-March 2015

Worked with a team as a field chemist to manage hazardous waste at different sites in the New England area. Sites included hospitals, laboratories, pharmaceuticals, higher education and industrial businesses. Hazardous waste management of these sites included proper handling, transportation and disposal of chemicals to treatment storage and disposal facilities while exercising safety and compliance with EPA, state, local, DOT and OSHA regulations.

Research Lab Technician

Atlantic Ecology Lab U.S. EPA, Narragansett, RI, January 2013-September2013

Worked on data collection and processing for a project regarding nutrient loading in salt marshes located in Rhode Island and Long Island Sound. Tasks included basic lab procedures and techniques, field work, data analysis and GIS graphing. Results from this project were published in a co-authored publication, ‘Ulva additions alter soil biogeochemistry and negatively impact Spartina alterniflora growth’.

Undergraduate Research Fellow

University of Rhode Island Outreach Center, Kingston, RI, May 2011-December2011

Designed and administered an online survey to 120 green industry professionals that measured the effectiveness of certified training programs aimed at enhancing environmental quality in Rhode Island. Survey results were formatted into graphs showing knowledge retained from these training programs.
