As part of my volunteer experience, I volunteered as a URI 101 mentor for two years. My role as a mentor included assisting freshmen students getting accustomed to their new college courses, campus life, and providing them with essential resources to succeed at URI. Below you will find the learning contract for the aquaculture and fisheries section I mentored and photos from the service project we completed.

Our class service project was a trip to Save the Bay to harvest baby scallops. Although it was freezing outside, everyone felt like they contributed greatly to this local scallop restoration effort. We collected bags from the floor of Narragansett Bay and sifted through them to find baby scallops. Baby scallops are very tiny and have a hard time making it past their premature stage due to predators or fishing trawls, therefore our efforts to restore the scallop population helped Save the Bay in their ongoing project to prevent scallops from becoming an endangered species. We also came across other critters such as the invasive species the asian shore crab, the green crab, and some shrimp. As you can see below, everyone got really into their work!
